Introduction

If you have never heard of a treatment called Nasal Specific Technique and you suffer from nasal congestion, headaches, or any number of other symptoms that Nasal Specific Technique has been used to treat in the past, this post is good news for you. In this article I will give you an overview of what this technique is and what conditions it has been safely used to treat for decades. This minimally invasive therapy is a patient favorite for all things head and sinus related and even though it is relatively unknown to most people, the people that do know about it swear by it.

History: Nasal Specific Therapy has been in use since the 1950s.

Nasal Specific Technique was developed in the 1950s by Dr. Richard Stober, who was both a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine (DC). Part of the therapeutic order in Naturopathic Medicine is to address and support the structure of the body. Since structure determines function, it is easy to see that impaired structures can impair function. In the case of the skull, impaired functions have the capacity to lead to symptoms such as unexplained headaches, chronic nasal congestion, a sense of pressure in the sinuses, snoring, in some cases symptoms of autonomic dysregulation, and many other symptoms.

Nasal Specific Technique was created to manipulate structures of the skull that are not easily accessible with other types of cranial manipulation techniques. It is a minimally invasive technique that helps support natural functions of cranium in manner that is similar to the way a chiropractic adjustment helps support natural motion and function of the spine.

The Technique: This technique involves inflating a special type of balloon that is inserted into the nasal cavity.

Nasal Specific works by inflating a special type of balloon in the nasal cavity. Typically, a narrow balloon is inserted in the nose and inflated at three different levels in the nasal cavity through each nostril. Treating each level allows for maximum effect from the treatment. The whole treatment generally takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

How it Works: The inflation of the balloon causes mechanical pressure on the bones of the skull that form the nasal cavity.

The inflation of the balloon causes a mechanical pressure on the bones of the skull that form the nasal cavity which can help relieve symptoms around the eyes and sinuses.

The pressure from the inflated balloon inside the nasal canal gently pushes several bones of the skull outward. This is opposite to the type of force our skulls experience on a regular basis. If a person rests their head on a pillow, the pillow presses against the skull with an inward force; if a person hits their head on something or is hit on the head by something (i.e. a soccer ball, a boxing glove, etc.), there is an inward, compressive force generated against their skull.

Since the balloon used in Nasal Specific Technique creates an outward force it generally causes a sensation of openness in head and sinuses that is a great relief for many people.

How Many Treatments are Needed? Many people feel immediate relief but some people may take several treatments to feel better.

For some people one treatment is enough, but more commonly it takes 3-5 treatments for longer lasting results. This is common with most physical manipulation techniques such as the well known chiropractic adjustment.

The treatment may cause mild discomfort for a few seconds each time the balloon is inflated, but most people find that the relief they experience following the treatment more than makes up for the slight, momentary discomfort they may experience during the treatment. This has been described by patients as feeling like a chiropractic adjustment in their skull.

Most patients that experience this technique are so impressed that, after they complete their treatment course, they will come in once a year just for a tune-up treatment to make sure they never go back to experiencing intense symptoms again.

Why Get This Treatment? Nasal Specific Technique has been useful for people suffering with many types of problems

Nasal Specific Technique has been a very effective treatment for many patients with a wide variety of conditions. Some of these conditions include:

  • Chronic nasal congestion

  • Sinus problems

  • Headaches

  • Snoring and sleep apnea

  • Autonomic dysregulation

If you are experiencing these symptoms and no one has been able to determine why, or offer treatment that has been helpful, Nasal Specific Technique might by a good option.

Conclusion

Nasal Specific Technique has been used safely and effectively for over six decades to help people who were suffering from many conditions. It is a treatment that can be used by most people who suffer from any of the problems listed above and it is a great natural treatment that encourages the optimal functioning of the body without the use of pharmaceutical drugs, invasive devices, or surgical procedures.
